“Discipline is to be rooted in the teacher’s vigilance, that is the total presence of the teacher as a person whose authority is established by competence and dedication, who is prepared to anticipate and forestall disruption in the class, and who acts as a model of firmness and consistency.”
– St. John Baptist De La Salle (Conduct 13:13)

The aforementioned quote from our founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle, forms the basis of our discipline program at St. Paul’s School. In a Lasallian school everything depends on the quality of the teachers. Teachers and good teaching are at the heart of the Lasallian enterprise. St. John Baptist de La Salle expected his teachers to be competent and effective, to be highly motivated and to see their profession as a ministry, a vocation worthy of a lifetime commitment. We believe that discipline is to be rooted in the teacher’s vigilance, which is the total presence of the teacher as a person, whose authority is established by competence and dedication, who is prepared to anticipate and forestall disruption in the class, and who acts as a model of firmness and consistency.

We expect our teachers to watch over our students and to observe and learn their character, and to correct them when their behavior is unacceptable or disruptive to the learning environment of our school. The correction of students is one of the most important tasks to be done in any school. In a Lasallian school, “correction” is at the heart of the discipline program as opposed to “punishment”. Focusing on the “positive”, correction provides a teaching moment for the educator and opportunities for the student to learn and to correct his mistake or fault and ultimately, move forward in a positive, meaningful way that will serve him well in his future decisions.

“Reproof and correction cause the young to reflect on what they need to do leading them to watch over themselves so as not to make the same mistakes all the time.” – St. John Baptist De La Salle

We expect our teachers to be firm and consistent through the necessity of joining gentleness to firmness in the guidance of young men.  With the cooperation of our parents in our endeavors, we will be successful in developing men of God.

Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!
