Golf Tournament
Rescheduled to Friday, December 4, 2020
The Joseph A. Champagne / Gene Bennett Memorial Golf Tournament originally began as the Saint Paul’s Alumni Golf Tournament. Several years later in 1996, the tournament committee changed the name to honor long standing Saint Paul’s supporter, Joseph “Mickey” A. Champagne. As a founding member of the Saint Paul Athletic Association in the early ‘50s, Mickey was at the center-working and giving for the good of the students of Saint Paul’s. Over the past 60 years, he and his company, Champagne Beverage, have been instrumental in contributing to a myriad of school events. In fact, the school and the Alumni Association recognized “Mickey” for all his work and made him an Honorary Alumnus. Champagne Beverages, under the leadership of Mickey’s son, Joel (’75), has continued their support and great work.
In 2011, the tournament added to its name that of another loved and cherished icon of the Saint Paul’s Community, Coach Gene Bennett. Coach Bennett’s career at Saint Paul’s began in 1962. Gene, a dedicated man of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, was the consummate Lasallian and served Saint Paul’s in many capacities. Beyond a stellar career in the classroom, he was the basketball coach with the most wins in school history, athletic director, alumni director, and tenured golf coach.
Mission Statement: “In addition to giving thanks and honoring these two individuals, the tournament provides a fun and entertaining environment of golf, food and prizes for the purposes of community, fellowship, and fundraising. Net proceeds have contributed to technological improvements in the classroom, tuition assistance, campus organizations, capital improvements, and community service projects. This tournament enables The Saint Paul Alumni Association to further the mission of St. John Baptist De La Salle. The tournament is held each fall at the beautiful Tchefuncta Country Club and is well attended and supported not only by our alumni but by the local community at large.
